Entertainment Corey Booker: 'God is in heaven, and with him is one of our angels, Whitney Houston

The funeral for music legend Whitney Houston got under way Saturday in her hometown of Newark, NJ.
After a rousing performance by the choir of the New Hope Baptist Church, A. Curtis Pharaoh, the church’s minister of music, introduced Newark Mayor Corey Booker.
“We are here to mourn our loss, but to celebrate her life,” Booker said. “God is in heaven, and with him is one of our angels, Whitney Houston.”
After several inspirational musical numbers and scripture readings from the church members, Houston's aunt, the singer Dionne Warwick, thanked those gathered for attending, and introduced actor and producer Tyler Perry.
Perry recounted a dinner he had with Houston in Atlanta years ago where he first became aware of Houston's spiritual side.
"It was at that moment I knew I would do all I can to stand with her," he said. "There was a grace that carried her from heaven down through Miss Cissy Houston ... A grace that carried her to the top of the charts. The other thing I know for sure ... Whitney Houston loved the Lord."
Gospel star Bebe Winans was the first of several scheduled gospel and pop stars to perform.
"What I'm going to miss, is crazy Whitney," Winans said before singing, recounting a story of how Houston, at the top of her fame, said she wanted to open for him and his wife Cece, "Because you're broke, right?" that had the church laughing uproariously.
Several more music and entertainment stars were also there to say good-bye to their friend, including her ‘My Bodyguard’ co-star Kevin Costner, talk show titan Oprah Winfrey, singer Mariah Carey, and actor Forest Whitaker.
Houston’s much-maligned ex-husband, Bobby Brown, and their daughter, Bobbi Kristina were in attendance as well. Brown was scheduled to perform with his band in Connecticut later Saturday evening.
Aretha Franklin, whom Houston lovingly called "Aunt Ree," had been expected to sing at the service, but fell ill.
"Regretfully, I am so sorry that I was unable to be with you at Whitney's service today," Frankin said in a statement. "I had every intention of being there. But unfortunately I had terrible leg spasms and locked leg muscles until 4:00 a.m. this morning following my concert last night, which I've been having for the last few days."
The service marked exactly one week after the 48-year-old Houston -- one of music's all-time biggest stars -- was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel in California. A cause of death has yet to be determined.
Houston's death at the age of 48 marked the final chapter for the superstar whose fall from grace while shocking was years in the making. Houston had her first No. 1 hit by the time she was 22, followed by a flurry of No. 1 songs and multi-platinum records.
Over her career, she sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone. Her voice, an ideal blend of power, grace and beauty, made classics out of songs like "Saving All My Love For You," `'I Will Always Love You," `'The Greatest Love of All" and "I'm Every Woman." Her six Grammys were only a fraction of her many awards.
But amid the fame, a turbulent marriage to Brown and her addiction to drugs tarnished her image. She became a woman falling apart in front of the world.
Her last album, "I Look To You," debuted on the top of the charts when it was released in 2009 with strong sales, but didn't have the staying power of her previous records. A tour the next year was doomed by cancellations because of illness and sub-par performances.
Still, a comeback was ahead: She was to star in the remake of the movie "Sparkle" and was working on new music. Her family, friends and hard-core fans were hopeful.
Houston is to be buried next to her father, John Houston, in nearby Westfield, N.J.

Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi pulled from tub day before mom's death, report says

The day before Whitney Houston was found dead in her bathtub at the Beverly Hilton, her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, fell asleep in a bathtub in the exact same hotel, Spices of Africa has learned.
According to TMZ sources, friends of Bobbi Kristina tried knocking on her door repeatedly Friday night, but she didn't answer. They then called security to get them to unlock the door and help them get Bobbi out of the tub.
Our sources say it happened on the same floor of the hotel where Whitney would be found dead the next day. We're told the room Bobbi Kristina was in was booked under Whitney's name.
Bobbi Kristina has been hospitalized twice since her mother's passing and SOA is told her family fears she might be suicidal.

Rx drugs reportedly killed Houston, but officials still probing possible drowning

Relatives of late pop icon Whitney Houston have reportedly been told by coroner officials that the singer died from what appears to be a combination of Xanax and other prescription drugs mixed with alcohol rather than drowning.
The press, citing family sources, reports that Los Angeles County Coroner officials told relatives there was not enough water in Houston's lungs to conclude she drowned. Houston'were told she may have died before her head became submerged.
When paramedics arrived, they found the singer unresponsive in the bathtub, the Los Angeles Times reported. But while her body was found there, one source told the Times that officials were unsure whether she died of natural causes or from something else.
Spices if Africa is also reporting that Houston's mother has arranged for the singer's body to be flown back to Atlanta as early as Tuesday.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said  that an autopsy on Houston's body has been completed, but official results have been placed on hold, pending toxicology tests.
Los Angeles Deputy Coroner Ed Winter said at a press conference that the tests could take six to eight weeks to process.
Winter added that the Beverly Hills Police Department had requested a "security hold" on the results of the coroner's investigation, meaning no further details will be made available until the inquiry is complete.
He confirmed earlier comments made by police that "no foul play is suspected."
He also confirmed that Houston was found Saturday afternoon in a bathtub in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Prescription drugs had been found in the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel room where Houston's lifeless body was discovered Saturday afternoon just hours before a huge Grammy party she was to attend.
Police discovered a half dozen bottles of medication in Houston's room, Spices of Africa reported, adding that family members said Houston had been taking the prescription drug Xanax, which is often used to treat anxiety.
When combined with alcohol, Xanax can cause drowsiness. Houston was reportedly found in her bathtub --says her head was underwater -- and could not be revived by paramedics after being removed from the tub.
No alcohol was found in the preliminary sweep of Houston's room, Spices of Afica reports, but there were multiple reports that Houston had been drinking with friends the night before at the hotel.
Houston had also attended rehearsals for the Grammys on Thursday, coaching singers Brandy and Monica, according to a person who was at the event but was not authorized to speak publicly about it. The person said Houston looked disheveled, was sweating profusely and liquor and cigarettes could be smelled on her breath.
She was also observed behaving "erratically" earlier in the week at a Los Angeles club, according to multiple reports.
Houston's body was removed from the hotel early Sunday morning, hours after the Grammy awards party she was there to attend had taken place four floors below her room.
Houston was 48.
Once pop music's undisputed queen, her voice and image had been ravaged by decades of drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown.
Houston's death on the eve of the Grammy Awards sent shock waves through the music industry, with many stars expressing shock and sadness.
Brown reportedly broke down backstage before a show with his band New Edition in Southhaven, a few miles south of Memphis.
Brown skipped the first song of the concert, but appeared onstage for the second. He shouted, "I love you, Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage." He then blew a kiss to the sky with visibly teary eyes.
Aretha Franklin, her godmother, said in a short statement: "I just can't talk about it now. It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen."
Houston's death will likely put a damper on Sunday's Grammy awards, music's biggest night of the year. Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan will perform a tribute to Houston at the awards, according to reports.
Grammy executive producer Ken Erhlich said event organizers believed Hudson -- the Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning artist -- could perform a "respectful musical tribute" to Houston, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"It's too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and, in particular, her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years," Ehrlich told the newspaper.
At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."
She had the perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.
"Six-time Grammy winner Whitney Houston was one of the world's greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades," Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy said in a statement.
"Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice," he said.
Houston influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who, when she debuted, sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.
But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once-serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.
"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.
Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album "I Look To You." The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.
Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on "Good Morning America" went awry as Houston's voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.
A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out.
Canceled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

Whitney Houston (1963 – 2012)

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time. Her list of awards includes two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide. Inspired by prominent soul singers in her family, including her mother Cissy Houston, cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin, Houston began singing with New Jersey church's junior gospel choir at age 11.[6] After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.
Houston was the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits ("Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love of All", "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)", "Didn't We Almost Have It All", "So Emotional" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go"). She was the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Top Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly "Top Pop Album") on the Billboard magazine year-end charts. Houston's 1985 debut album Whitney Houston, became the best-selling debut album by a female act at the time of its release. The album was named Rolling Stone's best album of 1986, and was ranked at number 254 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Her second studio album Whitney (1987), became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for "How Will I Know", influenced several African-American female artists to follow in her footsteps.
Houston's first acting role was as the star of the feature film The Bodyguard (1992). The film's original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its lead single "I Will Always Love You", became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. With the album, Houston became the first act (solo or group, male or female) to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week period. The album makes her the only female act in the top 10 list of the best-selling albums of all time, at number four. Houston continued to star in movies and contribute to their soundtracks, including the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996). The Preacher's Wife soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album in history. Three years after the release of her fourth studio album My Love Is Your Love (1998), she renewed her recording contract with Arista Records. She released her fifth studio album Just Whitney in 2002, and the Christmas-themed One Wish: The Holiday Album in 2003. In 2009, Houston released her seventh studio album I Look to You.
On February 11, 2012, Houston died of unknown causes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
REST IN PEACE to a female legend...We pray you rest in peace...You will be greatly missed but your legacy lives on...Till we meet again.

Bobbi Kristina Denied Access to See Whitney's Body

Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina got into an angry shouting match with police officers outside the hotel room where her mother was found dead ...

According to law enforcement sources ... Bobbi Kristina showed up on the 4th floor of the Beverly Hilton several hours after Whitney's death. We're told when officers informed her no one was allowed to see the body -- BK screamed, cursed and demanded to see her mother.

Ultimately, she was not allowed into the room and left. We're told Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick also showed up later. She too was turned away by officers.

As we reported earlier ... other family members and friends -- who were in the room when authorities arrived -- identified Whitney's body.

Whitney Houston Prescriptions Found Possible Drowning

No illegal drugs have been found in the hotel room where Whitney Houston died -- at least not yet -- but prescription drugs were present, and it's possible the singer drowned in the bathtub ...

Sources tell us ... when EMTs arrived Whitney's body was already removed from the bathtub so it will take an autopsy to determine if she OD'd, drowned or died from some other cause.

Informed sources tell us ... Beverly Hills cops -- who were still searching the room at the time this story was posted -- found various pill bottles. There was no evidence that Whitney was drinking alcohol in the room.

Whitney's body was just removed from the room on a gurney.  It will go to the morgue for an autopsy to determine cause of death.

Whitney Houston remembered at Clive Davis pre-Grammy gala

Celebrities are remembering Whitney Houston at Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy gala -- an event she had been expected to attend.
The singer was found dead Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the same place where stars like Alicia Keys had been prepping for the festive gala.
Despite the death, the event went on as planned. Stars including Dr. Dre, Adam Lambert, Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian were in attendance.
India.Arie says Houston "set the standard for what it is to be a great female artist."
Producer Jimmy Jam says her death was a "bittersweet irony" given that Davis introduced Houston to the world at the event more than two decades ago.
Jam says it "may be appropriate we're saying our first goodbyes to Whitney at a Clive Davis event."

Some fans of the late Whitney Houston vent anger at her ex Bobby Brown

Some of Whitney Houston's fans took out their anger at her ex-husband Bobby Brown on social media after hearing the news of her death on Saturday.
“I will always love Whitney. I will always loathe Bobby Brown,” one wrote on Facebook.
“Bobby Brown you took our diva and turned her into an addict,” another fumed.
Friends and fans of the late singer have long blamed Brown for damaging Houston both professionally and personally.
“I think that if you look at the arc of Whitney’s career the problems definitely seemed to creep into her music career and her personal life when she got together with Bobby Brown,” said M. Tye Colmer the editor of Billboard.com. “If you look a those moments there is definitely a connection that turned out to be very self-destructive. Even after she and Bobby divorced, she was never able to escape the problems she faced with Bobby.”
Brown was reportedly beside himself with grief on Saturday night, relatives told People magazine. He was allegedly having crying fits as he prepared to perform with his band New Edition in Mississippi.
Brown skipped the first song of the concert, but appeared onstage for the second. He shouted, "I love you, Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage." He then blew a kiss to the sky with visibly teary eyes.
Later in the concert Bobby Brown appeared emotionally overcome as his group performed a ballad. When the song began, he joined in but his voice cracked and he walked off stage. The concert ended soon afterward.
Brown and Houston met in 1989 at the Soul Train Awards. They married in 1992 and divorced in 2007. During the marriage, Brown was arrested on drug and alcohol charges, and Houston went into rehab twice.
In a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey Houston admitted to taking drugs, including cocaine and marijuana, with Brown, and claimed that the New Edition singer was abusive to her and at one point spit on her during their marriage.
"He was my drug," Houston told Winfrey of her ex-husband. "I didn't do anything without him. I wasn't getting high by myself. It was me and him together. We were partners."
"I was so weak to him," Houston said. "I was so weak to the love.
Addiction experts say that a volatile relationship can drive someone with addictive tendencies into a spiral of continued self-abuse.
“A volatile relationship can serve as a trigger, especially if they argue a lot or if there is a tumultuous relationship," explained addiction specialist Dr. Harris Stratyner, the regional clinical Vice President of Caron Treatment Center. "Addicted individuals look for reasons to use. So, if they fight a lot or disagree the addicted individual is going to go out and use.”
Straytner does not treat either party, but stressed that a spouse can enable an addicted person, particularly if they have a relationship like Brown and Houston’s where they fight and reconcile in a vicious cycle.
“Like many addicts Whitney and Bobby rode high highs and low lows, both as a married couple and as two people who enabled each other's addictions,” explained relationship expert and author of “Cult of Celebrity” Cooper Lawrence. “It seems they had nothing but trouble—separately and together. Trouble followed them.”
The Associated Press and Newscore contributed to this report.

Party goes on as police investigate Whitney Houston’s death a few floors above

In a strange set of circumstances on Saturday, the famed Beverly Hilton Hotel was bustling with the annual Clive Davis Pre-Grammy party - all while an investigation into the death of Davis's own protégé and musical legend, Whitney Houston, was being conducted a few floors above.
The multi-award winning singer, 48, was discovered by her bodyguard in the bathtub of her fourth floor room late Saturday afternoon.
The Beverly Hills Police Department received a 911 call at around 3.43pm to respond to a medical emergency, and the fire department was already on the scene in preparation for the star-studded Davis party. Despite paramedics attempts to revive Houston via CPR, she was pronounced dead at 3.55pm. She was positively identified by members of her team, and her daughter Bobbi Kristina, 19, and mother Cissy were notified of her death.
According to TMZ, Houston had spoken to her mom by phone less than half-an-hour before she died, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. A few hours prior to that, Houston's cousin Dionne Warwick had also called and again, everything appeared fine. The pop queen, who is listed as residing in New Jersey, had apparently been staying at the well-known Beverly Hills hotel for several days with the intention of attending Davis's Grammy bash.
Houston had walked the red carpet Thursday night and performed at the "Kelly Price & Friends Unplugged: For the Love of R&B Grammy Party," at L.A.'s Tru Hollywood nightclub, but left the event looking particularly worse for wear with blood stains on her legs and hair over her face. According to multiple reports, she seemed upset, was acting erratically and yelling at people in the club.
TMZ reported that Houston had yet another boisterous evening with her entourage on Friday, filled with heavy partying at the Beverly Hilton bar that raised quite a few eyebrows.
However, that very bar was a scene of chaos in quite a different fashion on Saturday night. Despite speculation that the 800-person Davis party would be canceled following the tragic news, it was business-as-usual as droves of onlookers, media and high-profile guests including Britney Spears, NeYo, Tom Hanks, Matthew Morrison, Dr. Dre, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross and Jon Voight stepped out for the swanky affair.
"A few hours ago they were thinking of canceling (tonight)," party guest and music big-wig, Richard Branson, said ahead of the party. "But Clive said Whitney would have wanted the show to go on."
And it did.
Yet in among the black chauffeured SUVs rolling in to drop off talent was the "Crime Lab" police van parked near the valet circle, although it was later moved to the hotel's back loading dock. Calls to the Coroner confirmed that they had not yet been notified of Houston's death, and as of late Saturday night, police were still in the process of seeking a search warrant to the room where she died to conduct a full investigation.
"This is just wrong. Her body is still right here in the building, and yet here everyone is out partying and playing her tribute music," said one onlooker, as news of Houston's death flashed across a television in the hotel lobby. "It's so eerie."
Another party guest concurred.
"It's surreal. I can't believe the body is still here and this is all going on," he said. "I don't know if its disrespectful, or a celebration of her life."
Some were learning of Houston's death for the first time, expressing shock and confusion, and almost everyone was whispering among themselves or phoning a friend to commiserate the news.
Away from the flurry of posing celebrities, extremely loud music and sponsored ads (there was even a car on display accompanied by colorful flashing lights) there was action behind the building. News crews, paparazzi, security personnel and police vehicles took over the back entrance, under speculation that Houston's body would be taken from the hotel amid the madness.
A small vigil of a few fans also formed at one side entrance by the hotel, however anyone who wasn't a hotel or party guest/employee most likely wouldn't have made it past security and inside the Hilton in the wake of the news.
The cause of death remains unknown, however foul play is not suspected.
Grammy president Neil Portnow confirmed at the Davis party that Jennifer Hudson will perform a Houston tribute at the awards ceremony on Sunday, and L.A. Reid told us that the late singer was in premature negotiations to take a role of the judging panel of next season's "The X-Factor."
"Whitney's people reached out about her being on 'X-Factor' and if she would have been on she would have been an amazing mentor," he said.

Singer Whitney Houston found dead

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died, Fox News confirms. She was 48.
The Beverly Hills Police Department responded to an emergency call at the Beverly Hilton hotel Saturday, Lt. Mark Rosen, of the Beverly Hills Police Department said.
Members of hotel staff and fire department officials attempted to revive a person on the fourth floor, who has since been confirmed to be Houston, Rosen said.
Officials did not see obvious signs of criminal intent, and are currently investigating to determine the cause of death, he said.
Houston's death on the eve of the Grammy Awards sent shock waves through the music industry, with many stars expressing shock and sadness.
Brown reportedly broke down back stage before a show with his band New Edition in Southhaven, a few miles south of Memphis.
Brown skipped the first song of the concert, but appeared onstage for the second. He shouted, "I love you, Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage." He then blew a kiss to the sky with visibly teary eyes.
Her longtime mentor Clive Davis held his annual concert and dinner Saturday at the hotel where her body was found. Producer Jimmy Jam, who had worked with Houston, said he anticipated the evening would become a tribute to her.
Aretha Franklin, her godmother, also said she was stunned.
"I just can't talk about it now," Franklin said in a short statement. "It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen."
The Rev. Al Sharpton said he would call for a national prayer Sunday morning during a service at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
Houston's death is sure to put a damper on the Grammy's, which are considered music's biggest night of the year.
Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan will perform a tribute to Houston at the awards, according to reports.
Grammy executive producer Ken Erhlich said event organizers believed Hudson -- an Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning artist -- could perform a "respectful musical tribute" to Houston, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"It's too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years," Ehrlich told the newspaper.
According to ET Online, Chaka Khan will also perform as part of Sunday night's tribute to Houston.

"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.
It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.
She seemed to be born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.
Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.
"The time that I first saw her singing in her mother's act in a club ... it was such a stunning impact," Davis told "Good Morning America."
"To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine," he added.
Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with "Whitney Houston," which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. "Saving All My Love for You" brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. "How Will I Know," "You Give Good Love" and "The Greatest Love of All" also became hit singles.
Another multiplatinum album, "Whitney," came out in 1987 and included hits like "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."
The New York Times wrote that Houston "possesses one of her generation's most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity."
Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the "Soul Train Awards" in 1989.
"Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?" she told Katie Couric in 1996. "You're not black enough for them. I don't know. You're not R&B enough. You're very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them."
Some saw her 1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to refute those critics. It seemed to be an odd union; she was seen as pop's pure princess while he had a bad-boy image, and already had children of his own. (The couple had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993.) Over the years, he would be arrested several times, on charges ranging from DUI to failure to pay child support.
But Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.
"When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place," she told Rolling Stone in 1993. "You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that's their image. It's part of them, it's not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody's angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy."
It would take several years, however, for the public to see that side of Houston. Her moving 1991 rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America's sweetheart.
In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with "The Bodyguard." Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer (Houston) guarded by a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) was an international success.
It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which sat atop the charts for weeks. It was Grammy's record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the "Bodyguard" soundtrack was named album of the year.
She returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with "Waiting to Exhale" and "The Preacher's Wife." Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, "My Love Is Your Love," in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut "It's Not Right But It's Okay."
But during these career and personal highs, Houston was using drugs. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, she said by the time "The Preacher's Wife" was released, "(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. ... I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. ... I wasn't happy by that point in time. I was losing myself."
In the interview, Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.
Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Winfrey in 2010. But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.
She was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumors spread she had died the next day. Her crude behavior and jittery appearance on Brown's reality show,
"Being Bobby Brown," was an example of her sad decline. Her Sawyer interview, where she declared "crack is whack," was often parodied. She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.

Ex-National Table Tennis Star, Yomi Bankole Dies At 52

Former Nigerian national table tennis player, Yomi ‘The Hawk’ Bankole, is reportedly dead. He was 52.
The ace tennis player, according to one of Nigeria’s national dailies, Punch Newspapers, died on Sunday, January 29, 2012 in Lagos and his corpse was deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital(LASUTH) in Ikeja, Lagos State.
Bankole came to prominence in the 80s, sharing the spotlight with Musa Atanda, a renowned Nigerian tennis player, who was at the time on the top spot of table tennis on the African continent.
Prior to his death, Bankole, was regarded as the oldest table tennis player in Nigeria. His fame however dwindled in the early 90s owing to personal problems which plagued him relentlessly, leading to a four-year stint in prison upon conviction for armed robbery in 2004. In recent interviews, (conducted by 234next), he bewailed some of his travails thus:
I will not say I regret not going to school because so many of the problems came from me. During my playing days, even graduates didn’t earn what I was getting but I joined a bad gang and even got involved in drugs. So I squandered all my money, property and everything. Later on, my house got burnt; I lost a child, my mother and wife. There are players who came long after me and are better off and they didn’t even have half of the education I had’ he stated.
Maybe God allowed it because he wanted me to be close to him; I am a changed person now. I go to church; I may do any other thing but I don’t forget God. I am not employed, neither do I earn any form of income; some people give me N200, N500, that’s how I survive’.
Secretary of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Segun Oguntade commented on the Bankole’s death. ‘It is a sad development but there is nothing we can do. Bankole gave his all at both club and national level for the country. May his soul rest in peace’, he told Punchng.com
He never regained his past glory, yet vowed to continue ‘to play table tennis for the rest of my life’.

Was the Inquest Into Amy Winehouse's Death Illegal?!

Amy Winehouse's life had its fill of controversy, and now so too does her death.
British officials are currently debating the legality of the inquest into the late Grammy winner's passing after it was revealed that the coroner in charge of conducting the singer's inquest was woefully unqualified for the job.
So, what does this mean? Could Amy's cause of death change and the investigation get reopened?
It's possible. But not likely. Here's the deal…
Last October, coroner Suzanne Greenaway declared that Winehouse suffered a "death by misadventure," an unintended consequence of accidental alcohol poisoning. The judgment was accepted and everything seemed to have been done by the books. For a little while, anyway.
A month later, Greenaway resigned from her job after it emerged that she failed to meet the standards required for coroner appointments: turns out, she logged just two-and-a-half of the necessary five years required at the Law Society. And while coroners are also expected to be "qualified medical practitioners," Greenaway's history of being simply a nurse in her native Australia also fell short of the mandatory qualifications of the job.
(For those wondering how she made the cut in the first place, well, it really is who you know…She was appointed to the role by her husband, Inner North London Coroner Dr. Andrew Scott Reid, who has since apologized for his oversight.)
Unfortunately for the Winehouse family, this is just the latest upset in the tragic saga, as last year the inquest report detailing the 27-year-old's cause of death was delivered to the wrong address, though quickly returned to police.
All told, including Winehouse, Greenaway rendered verdicts on 30 inquests. And while her declarations could potentially be declared illegal and need to be reopened by a more qualified professional, that would only occur if someone decided to challenge the verdicts in court.
A long shot, but then so was this situation happening in the first place.

Ian Abercrombie, Elaine's Boss on Seinfeld, Dies at 77

Ian Abercrombie, the British actor best known to audiences Stateside for playing Elaine Benes' boss, Mr. Pitt, on Seinfeld, as well as voicing the Emperor in George Lucas' animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series and film, has died.
He was 77.
Per the Los Angeles Times, Abercrombie passed away Thursday at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from complications of kidney failure after being diagnosed recently with lymphoma. While enjoying a successful four-decade career on both stage and screen, it wasn't until he appeared in a seven-episode arc on the sixth season of Seinfeld that Abercrombie became a household name.
"Incredibly so," Abercrombie told CNN in 1998. "I mean, I have been around as an actor for 40-odd years, and this show knocked me out of the ballpark."
Portraying Elaine's hard to please boss, Justin Pitt, the thesp garnered laughs on a weekly basis driving Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character batty—from eating Snickers bars with a knife and fork to his preference for wearing white knee socks. Pitt subsequently canned Elaine after becoming convinced she was trying to off him with Jerry's help.
"I was a pain in the neck. I was a hypochondriac. I was many things, and I just made her life so miserable," Abercrombie added. "She wouldn't take the salt off my pretzels, you know. She brought me white socks…she did a lot of things for me, but she could never do it right."
Born Sept. 11, 1934 in Grays, Essex, England, Abercrombie took to the theater as a boy during World War II before his family moved to the U.S. at 17. In 1955, he made his American stage debut opposite Jason Robards in a production of Stalag 17. After a short stint in the army, he went to L.A. to try his hand in television and film.
Abercrombie subsequently appeared in such movies as The Prisoner of Zenda, The Ice Pirates, Zandalee, Army of Darkness, Addams Family Values, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Mousehunt and Inland Empire. TV work was even more plentiful, with guest shots on Battlestar Galactica, Three's Company, Falcon Crest and Dynasty, as well as parts in the epic TV miniseries War and Remembrance, Cybil, Nip/Tuck and more recently The Wizards of Waverly Place.
To fanboys, he was famous for voicing Chancellor Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as well as the character of Ganthet in Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Ambrose in last year's animated hit Rango.
Abercrombie is survived by his brothers Douglas, Donald and Alex.
